As we get older our hairs’ pigment producing cells become less and less able to produce melanin and so our hair loses its colour. Just as we all have different shades of hair colour we also have different shades of colourless hair, from white through silver to grey.
How quick the process is also varies from person to person, some will grey fast and others slow, some in patches, others in gradients, it’s all down to your genes, we just don’t know which ones yet.
